Reflections in the Well

You are working quietly and sense someone enter the room before you hear a footstep. The Romans had a word for the sacred version of this—numen, the charge that animates a place without taking physical form. Nearly every tradition has a vocabulary for the current. Most people have felt it and filed it away.

The modern definition is time off: relax, unwind, catch up on errands. That is not what the day was. Across traditions the pause is spiritual, liturgical, communal—never recreational. Strip away the rituals and the same recognition appears everywhere: people need to stop before they run themselves into the ground.

Giving is the easier half. Allowing yourself to receive is unsettling—pride gets in the way, and the word charity carries its own stigma. Hakarat ha-tov means recognizing the good, and the harder question is whether gratitude and genuine suffering can occupy the same person at the same time.

Beyond the formal liturgy there is hitbodedut—self-seclusion, spoken aloud, free-form, alone. The term is relatively recent. The practice is ancient. Isaac went out lasuach in the field toward evening. Hannah poured out her soul without formula. David went into caves. A talk while on a walk.

The question comes up more than any other: why the hyphen in G-d? The answer runs back to the genizah—the practice of never writing the Name in a form that could later be erased, burned, or casually discarded. A small gesture with a very long memory behind it.

One year after a heart transplant, an accounting of what came before the hospital. A figure standing in the corner of the room, fully awake and not dreaming. An understanding without words that the road ahead would be hard, and a choice to stay anyway. Then a river, and a canoe without oars.

An argument about a New York grocery plan turned on a religious claim: if anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat. That is Paul, not Torah. Torah places no conditions on tzedakah at all—no test of why a person is needy. Not mercy. Justice.
