Under the Lectionary

Before a single word of the supper is spoken, the teacher rises from the table, removes his outer garment, ties a towel around his waist, and begins washing his students’ feet. No one in that room misreads the gesture. A master does not do this. The inversion is the theological statement.

The eye is the lamp of the body—but an instrument of perception can be miscalibrated, and the passage says plainly what happens then. If the light in you is darkness, how great is that darkness. The treasures moth and rust destroy are not only kept in vaults. Some are kept in the inner room.

By the time he reaches these three verses he has already said the essential thing twice, and the Greek verdict has been identical each time—apechousin, receipt given, account settled. Tzedakah, tefillah, ta’anit. Three central disciplines, one mechanism that hollows all of them out.

Insert prayer in the slot, turn the handle, await your gumball. The question most people carry and rarely say aloud is whether anyone is listening at all. What is offered in answer is not reassurance but a reorientation, and it arrives in verse 8: your Father knows what you need before you ask.

There is a persistent suspicion that nothing is ever truly free—that every act of kindness harbors an agenda. That instinct is not paranoia. It is pattern recognition, and it is correct often enough to have earned its place. The skeptics have correctly diagnosed the disease. This passage is the cure.

When I was a child, I thought as a child, and turn the other cheek rang as a coward’s enterprise. Give him the cloak too. Walk the second mile. What lex talionis actually was, and what is done to it here, turns that coward’s enterprise into one of the most demanding things ever asked of anyone.

On the surface it is nearly pedestrian: do not embellish your promises with oaths, simply tell the truth. It reads like advice for honest commerce. But Jesus is not interested in functional societies, and at Sinai the people answered na’aseh v’nishma—we will do and we will hear, in that order.

What if the commandments were never meant to be permanent—not because they were flawed, but because they succeeded? A person who has truly internalized Torah does not refrain from murder. They have become someone to whom murder is unthinkable. The goal of Torah is to make itself unnecessary.

Salt that hides is useless. Light that retreats is a contradiction. The danger named here is not opposition but assimilation—a loss of distinctiveness that renders covenant life invisible and inert. And they are named salt and light in their present vulnerability, not once conditions improve.

Popular reading takes the Beatitudes as moral encouragement—ideal traits, eventual consolation for present discomfort. That reading is not wrong in sentiment. It is wrong in substance. Blessed here is neither reward for virtue nor prediction of happiness. It is a declaration of status: who is already aligned.
