Under the Lectionary

The storm does not discriminate. The rain descends on both houses, the floods rise against both foundations, the winds beat on both structures with identical force. No calm season is promised to the wise builder. Only that when it comes—and it will come—what you built on will hold.

The verdict is not addressed to the indifferent or the hostile. It is addressed to the ones who arrived carrying everything they had done—who prophesied in the name, cast out demons in the name, performed wonders in the name. The Sermon ends not with a teaching but with a sentence.

The wolf does not announce himself and the false prophet wears no sign. They come in sheep’s clothing—the forms, the language, the role. And the clothing is not always a deliberate disguise. Often it grew there naturally, worn by someone who never decided to deceive anyone.

The image is ancient and the audience already knows it. Two gates, two roads, two crowds of vastly different sizes, two destinations. This is not an innovation. It is the oldest Jewish teaching about the shape of the moral life, pressed to its sharpest point—and beneath that, something more precise still.

Judge not, lest ye be judged. Six words, perhaps the most quoted moral instruction in Western civilization—deployed to silence prophets, shield the powerful, and end conversations that urgently needed to continue. What was precise and demanding has been compressed into a conversation-stopper.

He is not naive about the body. He knows people have to eat. The teaching is not that provision does not matter but that anxiety is a symptom—what it feels like to have set your weight on something that cannot carry it. The lilies do not achieve their glory. They receive it.

The men and women who scattered in Gethsemane, who hid behind locked doors, who walked away from Jerusalem in defeat—turned around, went back, and then went everywhere. The evidence for what became of them runs from solid to legendary to silent. No ancient source records any of them recanting.

They come to finish what Shabbat interrupted—not to witness a miracle but to tend a body. They bring spices. On the way they ask each other who will roll the stone back for them. That question is in the text. They are not expecting what they find.

The Greek word is stauros—an upright stake, or a cross structure more broadly; the shape is not specified. In 1968, construction workers in Jerusalem uncovered an ossuary holding the bones of a man named Yehohanan, an iron nail still driven through his right heel. His arms appear to have been tied, not nailed.

Zechariah names thirty pieces of silver as the wage a dismissed shepherd receives—so insulting that G-d tells the prophet to throw it to the potter. Exodus names it as the compensation owed when a slave is gored by an ox. Thirty is what something is worth when it is worth very little.
