Under the Lectionary

Ordinary darkness stays open to light because it has not confused itself with light. Counterfeit light resists correction precisely because it believes illumination has already arrived—and an eye convinced of its own clarity has nothing left to seek, and therefore nothing left to receive.

The new wineskin is not a superior replacement for the old one. It is the vessel that formation has kept supple. And Luke preserves a line the other two drop: no one having drunk old wine immediately desires new, for he says the old is good. That line is not a concession.

The conventional reading is not wrong as far as it goes: the Kingdom is of supreme value, worth any sacrifice to obtain. The Church Fathers read it that way and modern scholarship largely agrees. But the man who finds the treasure hides it again before buying the field, and the Greek complicates what looked settled.

A crowd gathers expecting revelation. Instead of explanation, he begins talking about dirt. The mashal does not tell the listener what kind of soil he is. It engineers the conditions under which he discovers it himself—and the ground, it turns out, has more than one kind of enemy.

Three parables in one teaching session by the sea, and in each the argument is not the one the audience expects. They are waiting for the cedar—the tree of empire, the image of a kingdom that announces itself. They are going to get a weed, a woman’s kitchen, and a farmer who sleeps through it.

Jesus told stories. That much everyone agrees on. What those stories were, what form they took, what argument they were making, and who they were aimed at—on those questions, two thousand years of reading have produced something bearing only passing resemblance to what was happening.

The council of 325 was trying to answer a genuine question. It answered with a political instrument—precise enough to be enforceable, blunt enough to bury what it was trying to protect. The nature miracles do not need Nicaea. They make their own argument, and it is the more interesting one.

Seven is not a quantity. Seven days and creation is complete. Seven branches on the menorah, seven weeks of the Omer, the seventh year when debts are released. When Luke reports that seven demons were cast out of Mary Magdalene, the number is a statement about how completely she had been overtaken.

She had no claim. By every measure the first-century world recognized, she stood outside the covenant, outside the tradition, outside the community whose G-d she was approaching. She came anyway, through every obstacle including an outright refusal, and did not stop. He marvels. He does not marvel often.

In Genesis, G-d does not gesture or craft with hands. He speaks, and the speech is generative—calling into existence what does not yet exist rather than naming what already does. Read from there, the healing narratives stop being interruptions of the natural order. They become its restoration.
