Divergence

Paris, January 1895. Soldiers tear the epaulettes from Alfred Dreyfus’s uniform and break his sword across their knee. Beyond the gates a crowd is screaming—not death to the traitor. He was a Polytechnique graduate on the General Staff, assimilated to the point of self-destruction. What exactly was he supposed to have converted out of?

In 1523 he wrote that Jews were being treated as though they were dogs rather than human beings, and that a good Christian in their position might reasonably have refused the faith. In 1543 the same man wrote that their synagogues should be burned. The temptation is to call it a change of mind. Neither document supports that.

Ordinary prejudice aims at the outside of a thing and needs no entry into it. It also has a half-life—the strange food becomes a diner staple nobody thinks to trace. There is another inheritance that does not decay that way. It goes in. It takes a word, strips the grammar that gave it meaning, and hands it back as evidence.

Roman imperial law. Church council canon. Papal bull. Islamic jurisprudence. Protestant territorial decree. Modern racial statute. Soviet administrative regulation. Nineteen centuries, three civilizations, dozens of sovereign authorities, one target. The most striking thing about the record is not the violence it enabled. It is that civilization after civilization decided to write it down.

A peasant who never heard a sermon, never read a word, never attended a trial absorbed the argument every time he entered his parish church. It was above the door, in the glass he prayed by, in the wood beneath the choir stalls. Every other mechanism of transmission needed a vehicle. The building needed none.

A thirteenth-century English tax document carries demonic figures drawn in among the names of Jewish taxpayers. Not a theological tract. An Exchequer receipt roll. The accusation it illustrates has changed costume in every century since, and its essential shape has not changed at all.

In 303 the empire ordered churches destroyed and scriptures burned. In 313 it extended tolerance to all religions. Ten years. Someone who watched the fires under Diocletian could have lived to see Constantine fund new basilicas—and to see a Christian empire begin building the legal architecture that defined what Jews were.

When the Temple burned in 70 CE, two communities had to decide—under catastrophic pressure and with remarkable speed—what they actually were without it. Both were Jewish. Both drew authority from the same texts, the same covenant, the same history. They decided differently. The divergence took three centuries.

The story most people know begins with hostility. It does not. Julius Caesar extended specific legal protections to Jewish communities across the empire—synagogues, Sabbath exemptions, the Temple tax. Not affection toward an admired minority. Administration toward a useful one. What follows is not a contempt revealed. It is one constructed.

Manetho’s history of Egypt does not survive. We have his account of the Exodus—the Hebrews as a quarantined colony of lepers, expelled as a sanitation measure—only because Josephus quoted it at length in order to refute it. The refutation became the preservation.
